Health Information Management (HIM) continues to be one of the fastest growing fields in health care, and HIM professionals are in high demand across the country. The U.S. Department of Labor projects a 16 percent growth in the demand for medical and health services managers through 2016. A workforce study conducted by AHIMA predicts a substantial shortfall in qualified HIM professionals to fill the 4,300 new jobs a year.
The HIM profession has evolved from a health data management role to one that is enabling the health care industry to transform the paper-driven methods to electronic health records. Consequently, health information technicians and managers have become data experts for collecting, interpreting and analyzing health information, as well as advocates for quality patient records and their privacy.
A 2010 AHIMA-sponsored study indicates that a Health Information Manager/Director with a bachelor’s degree earns between $9,000 and $16,000 more in salary per year than those holding an associate degree with an RHIT. According to a member study conducted by AHIMA, only 25 percent of HIM professionals with a RHIT certification earn more than $50,000 annually, while almost 60 percent with an RHIA make more than $50,000.
